"North America" definitely attributed to Duncan McFarlane, English 1818-1865.
McFarlane was typically an oil painter so this is a rare example of his watercolor expertise.
The scene is typical of his work and the detail of the ship its outstanding. The foremast sails the
American merchant flag and flying from the main mast is a red, white and blue banner with the
name"North America". Off the gaff is an American flag with thirteen stars with a large star in the center.
The ship is receiving the pilot boat No. 12 off Point Lynas, Anglesey.
This extreme clipper, North America, was built by Donald McKay in 1851 and owned by Nickerson & Co., Boston.
